Artist's Comments

A friend of mine recently suggested (I prefer challenged ;P) me to paint backgrounds other than landscapes. Basically, paint backgrounds with things that weren't directly created by nature. And it's true, a lot of my paintings follow the theme of character + landscape. There isn't a whole lot there that could be considered "man-made."

I decided to take him up on his suggestionchallenge and painted something manmade. It took me a while to think of something interesting, but this is what I came up with. Looking through the eyes of a traveler who is being greeted by the first soul he has seen in days. It's been forever since I read Redwall, but I do remember plenty of journeys that characters went on, and I believe that inspired this. Perhaps this is the mountain range before Salamandastron. (if I got my Redwall geography messed up, go ahead and correct me =P)

And for once, I'm happy with how the fire came out! :noes: Thanks to various friends for critiquing this as I painted. You know who you are. =)

Hope you guys like it! Enjoy! =D

This is fantastic, Temiree. I love the mood. It has something about it that reminds me very strongly of the old point & click adventures (which probably isn't very surprising as I have recently begun working on one of my own).

That'd be pretty hard considering there are tons of different landscapes, which can be modified further by different lighting. If I were to make a tutorial, it'd probably involve something specific (ie. clouds) or how I set up backgrounds in Photoshop. =)

What I can suggest, is don't be afraid to look at reference, and study from reference. That's how I've gotten as good as I am at backgrounds. =)

Haha, I can see what you mean. =D I'm glad you like the atmosphere! I was hoping that would pass along well to the viewer.

Good luck with your project!
