"Observation Date: June 14th, 2852
Planet: Epsilon Moon: Oskali B
Sun: Barnard's Star

A new recruit herbalist named Rihos arrived today. He was one of four to come off the ship. It's nice to see new faces around here. He seemed excited to come here, but how could I blame him? Oskali B is a unique place. It orbits Epsilon at a slow pace, steady enough that it will never see the light of the Barnard's Star, always hidden in Epsilon's shadow. You'd think nothing would ever be able to live here. That we wouldn't have a purpose being here.

Somehow, things do live here. Plants and insect-like creatures which glow with bio-luminescence all call this moon their home. As we have observed, their glowing is like bright flowers on Earth. The brighter they glow, the more likely they will attract these "insects" to pollinate them. There's hundreds of different kinds on this moon. There are white ones that grow along the water, glowing mushrooms that make their home under rocks. There's even a kind that grows underwater. All of them are gorgeous, and they all do their part to keep this planet warm and hospitable.

I remember arriving here 35 years ago. I felt the same way Rihos is right now. He's sitting out in the field by the stream. He's been out there for hours, just leaning on a rock and staring at the sky. I remember doing that. I felt minuscule in the universe...but I felt comfortable. It was an eerie kind of solitude, and humbled wasn't a strong enough word to describe it."

There's my backstory for this. :) It is my contest entry for :iconnotveryathletic:'s sci-fi contest. After the success of my last sci-fi pic, I figured it was worth giving another shot. I like the idea behind this. Maybe not very plausible, but it was fun to paint. I love space. =D

I did this over the course of a few weeks, just like my last contest entry. I also plan on making a tutorial on how to make a galaxy in the sky like in this one. So keep a heads up for it. =)

Hope you guys like it! Wish me luck!

EDIT: Replaced with a brighter version, and added a full resolution version. Click download to see it.

I just replaced it with a brighter version. I recommend taking another look. =)

Looks great! :D

It doesn't matter if it isn't plausible, it doesn't have to be. There are endless possibilities out there...

I love the glowing grass stuff, that's really cool. Sci-fi doesn't have to be plausible, that's what makes it sci-fi. lol!

Great piccy, I love the feel all around. =D

Oh wow Tem, as always you are able to capture an intense and amazing moment. Your space art always wows me, but the detail you gave to the rest of the picture, it almost feels like Im looking at a scientific photograph in some parts! I dont think I can say more without getting annoying, so just know I find this amazing otterboy, keep it up <333

Random thoughts:
:plotting: If the plants aren't obtaining energy from the sun, perhaps they are getting heat energy emanating from the rotation of the planet's core. I'm pretty sure the hot temperature under the Earth's crust is caused from rotational friction, not collected solar energy over time... the earth and the moon are actually getting further apart because they both have a positive charge, but would that affect the core rotation of the moon...?

I'm truly lost with how awesome this is :D. Your lighting alone... is just epic . Truly an original idea to have glowing off-worldly plants as far as I know, which really adds to the beauty of your scene . Haha, what I wouldn't give to join him :aww:.

:lmao: I can't imagine anything that could beat this ;p. :plotting: The only slightly weak points (in my eyes) I would be concerned about would be that the planet on the left doesn't have a lot of surface detail and that your character seems to be looking forward of his position (rather than behind where he would be looking directly at your falling stars). Typically when I think of the Earth, I think that there is a certain amount of land mass you can see, even when it is between your view point and the sun [link] . I appreciate the pose you have chosen for your character because it shows off his features extremely well, but having three asteroids in the background seems like quite a sight to be missing unless there is something even more spectacular in front of him the audience can't see. I would either suggest shortening and altering the paths of two of the asteroids to make them appear to be breaking off from the main one (so a single asteroid that broke apart on entry -- which is probably what you were aiming for and I'm not picking up on since it is unlikely the asteroids would be that close together in the first place unless they broke up on entry), or to have a couple additional comets around the corners of your shot to indicate the entire sky is filled with comets and your character is enjoying the show that you can't necessarily see, but can imagine. :plotting: Perhaps a slight randomness to the comet trails would be more realistic as well [link] since the smoke, I would imagine, would not form a perfect gradient and the reflection off of the smoke would reflect unevenly. Though conversely, a smooth gradient gives a slightly simple, cartoony feel, which in and of itself could be said to be ideal, artistically. I figure you aren't going for 100% realism anyway since it would detract from your scene (like a horizon haze would detract from your galaxy)-- I would expect the comets would be more yellow than blue, but then again it's possible the atmosphere is different, which could account for the different burn color... (yay for methane :lmao:). Perhaps the stars are a bit dense around the galaxy, but then again it is a galaxy :P, cool effect having the stars fade out around the planet, very subtle way of introducing an atmosphere :D

:) Looking at the entries, you definitely have an advantage by having both a foreground and a background, and consistent painting effects & textures. The only entry I would be worried about would be [link] , but that one seems to outline *everything* in black which detracts from the general softness the original artist was going for. I'm not sure if you really need luck, you already have a killer entry :XD:, but you have my best wishes none-the-less :)

Love your range of colors and the incredible detail in your character

Heh, interesting concept... yeah, certainly is humbling to think about what a tiny speck this planet is on the cosmic landscape - and yet there's a force at work that keeps us safe from any disasters that would completely wipe us out... :)

It's like Horton said in the movie version of "Horton Hears a Who"
(Regarding the speck containing Who-ville) Maybe they're not small? Maybe we're big? No, think about it! Supposing there was someone waaaay up there, looking down on our world right now... and to them we're the specks!
I dunno... personally, I feel that suggests a sort of religious contemplation of a higher being that oversees our world and protects it from disaster - kind of what Horton does with the speck.
